- Helped develop a protocol for the identification of marine sensitive zones in BC
- Conducted a critical review of environmental effects data and recommendations for improving the monitoring at a deep-sea outfall for primary treated municipal wastewater; concerns included PAHs and metals
- Program Chair for Coastal Zone Canada '98, responsible for conference structure and paper selection - a significant conference on coastal issues, including pollution, with delegates from over 40 countries.
- Pacific chapter editor for Canada's National Program of Action on the Control of Land-Based Sources of Marine Pollution, with sections on metal and organic contamination of the marine environment
- Developed a methodology for assessing effluent effects based on chemical tracers and effects on growth of indigenous mussel populations
- Prepared metadata catalogues of research and monitoring activities in the Georgia Basin
- Developed recommendations for monitoring the fisheries bycatch of seabirds based on input from a scientific workshop
- Managed DFO Pacific Region's research programs in contaminants science and fish habitat science
- Managed and participated in the scientific review of many environmental assessments for development proposals affecting the freshwater and marine environments, including base metal and uranium mining
- DFO's representative on the Pacific Region Ocean Disposal Advisory Committee, 1985-1995
- Led DFO intervention in the West Coast Offshore Hydrocarbon Exploration and Development Panel's environmental impact assessment hearings, managed several research projects related to the marine impacts of offshore energy exploration and hydrocarbon effects off Canada's north and west coasts.
- Developed a toxicology framework for the Alberta Oil Sands Environmental Research Program and contributed research to the toxicity requirement in the Metal Mining Liquid Effluent Regulations
- Developed site-specific water quality objectives and linked monitoring programs for metals and organics
- Evaluated effects of water and air pollution, especially from the pulp and paper and mining industries
- Author or co-author of over 25 scientific publications on environmental quality and environmental effects
