EXPERTISE:
Scientific Information on the Coastal Ocean
Environmental Assessment and Reporting
Chemical Data Review and Statistical Evaluation
EXPERIENCE
Provides environmental consultation on the biogeochemistry and toxicology of metals, metalloids and organometallic compounds in the marine environment, based on over 25 years work as a research scientist. An expert in the effects of the mining industry on the marine environment, and on the marine chemistry and effects of organotin compounds used as marine antifoulants.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Science Branch, Institute of Ocean Sciences (1976-1997)
Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Fisheries Research, Pacific Environment Institute (1971-1976)
Warnock-Hersey International, Chemical Testing Department, Vancouver, BC, (1970-1971)
- Conducted field studies for metals in sediments, soils, sea- and groundwater in conjunction with the shut-down of a coastal contaminated site on Vancouver Island and assessed metal data from sediment and water
- Conducted research on the fate and distribution of metals derived from mine tailings deposited into coastal waters
- Conducted research into the biogeochemistry of metals interacting with marine benthic organisms
- Conducted research into the fate and distribution of mercury in marine sediments derived from the chlor-alkali industry
- Conducted research into the fate and distribution of tributyltin-based marine antifoulants
- Conducted a review of the distribution and fate of natural asbestos in the Fraser River and in the marine environment to assess the potential for contamination from the sinking of a destroyer in the Strait of Georgia as an artificial reef
- Past Chair of the Environment Division of the Chemical Institute of Canada, and of the Canadian National Committee, Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR is an international scientific body)
- DFO's scientific representative on the Pacific Region Ocean Disposal Advisory Committee, 1996-1997
- Developed new analytical methodology for application to research problems
- Critical review of environmental effects data and recommendations for improving the monitoring of a deep-sea outfall for primary treated wastewater
- Assessed the current state of tributyltin research in Canadian west coast waters
- Assessed the use of elemental tracers in native mussel populations as a means of monitoring discharges from Kraft pulp mills
- Reviewed and made recommendations on environmental assessments involving marine chemistry
- Review and analysis of own research data using parametric and non-parametric methods
- Senior author of the NRC criteria review on organotin compounds
- Author or co-author of over 55 other scientific publications on the marine biogeochemistry and toxicology of metals, metalloids and organometallic compounds.
- Continuing journal referee for review of others' research data and statistical analysis for the scientific literature
